Hope, Community and Preparation

Watch the 13 minute video version of this post, which is episode 35 in my YouTube series, “Wisdom With Wes.”

As I sit to write this on October 1st, 2024, the recent onslaught of Hurricane Helene has left a significant impact, spanning multiple states and affecting countless lives. Although my own family and home remain unscathed, the devastation nearby in Charlotte, North Carolina, and surrounding regions is heartbreaking. These trying times urge us to reflect on the importance of hope and preparedness as we navigate the world’s uncertainties.

The Importance of Hope

In moments of crisis and on “regular days,” maintaining hope is crucial. The stories shared by my middle school students about the hurricane’s impact this past week were a profound testament to importance of resilience and community support when a disaster strikes. It’s essential to focus on hope and share messages that uplift and encourage those around us all the time, but especially during times of collective trauma like we are experiencing now in North Carolina. The tendency to become overwhelmed, depressed, or pessimistic in our current political climate can be daunting, but grounding ourselves in HOPE can steer us affirmatively through the storms of life.

One way I find encouragement is through sharing Bible verses; this has become an important part of my personal journey of faith for many years. I have been working on completing a book about sharing faith for more than a decade, Pocket Share Jesus: Be a Digital Witness for Christ. Staying grounded with hope hinges on controlling the information that influences our thoughts and emotional well-being.

Worldwide conflicts also add to the stress we face today. Ongoing wars continue to escalate, reminding us of the interconnected nature of global events. Although it’s easy to feel removed, it’s vital to prepare ourselves mentally and emotionally for the ripple effects.

Community: Our Stronghold

In the midst of calamity, community becomes our anchor. Stories of local initiatives to help disaster-stricken areas highlight the essence of humanity—people assisting each other, despite overwhelming challenges. However, vigilance is necessary, particularly with scams preying on goodwill. In my middle schol media classes, I emphasize the importance of verifying information and cautious online engagement, but this is an important lesson for all of us.

Creating and fostering supportive, local communities is imperative. We need channels through which we can share experiences, aid recovery, and provide solace amidst chaos. Whether it’s organizing aid drives or checking in on others, these actions weave the fabric that holds us together.

Spiritual Wellness and Resilience

Our spiritual well-being is another pillar that sustains us. As a follower of Jesus Christ, my personal trials have deepened my faith and reliance on spiritual growth. These experiences taught me that hope transcends our physical existence. The belief in prayer and spiritual strength can provide a strong foundation during life’s adversities.

Preparation: A Proactive Approach

Preparation goes hand in hand with hope and community. The best time to get ready for unforeseen events is before they happen. Having essential supplies—water, food, medical essentials—when there isn’t a crisis is a practical step we can all take.

The lessons from numerous natural disasters underscore the necessity for readiness. From past weather events to unexpected emergencies, being prepared can mitigate some of the fear and uncertainty we face. Simple acts like setting up water storage or ensuring a stock of essential items can make a significant difference in times of need.

A few years ago I started a project called “Communitarian Prepper,” which focuses on:

…taking proactive measures to prepare for emergencies while considering the well-being of your community. It goes beyond individual survivalism and embraces the idea of supporting and assisting our neighbors during challenging times.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

As we navigate these challenging times, let’s collectively foster hope, strengthening our communities and preparing prudently for whatever lies ahead. Evaluate your media consumption and curate it wisely to maintain a balanced perspective. When overwhelmed, it’s okay to unplug and refocus.

I encourage each of us to take proactive steps, whether staying informed, building connections, or preparing practically and spiritually. Hope, community, and preparation are not just ideals—they are necessities as we strive toward a resilient future.

Take care and may you find ways to embrace hope and community in your daily life. Have a great day ahead.
