Shame On Kansas

This is a good reason to not relocate to Kansas or other rabidly red states today. Imagine waking up and learning your state legislature has just invalidated your drivers license and official identity because of your gender?

The law bars any “sex” listing on driver’s licenses and birth certificates other than the one assigned at birth and invalidates existing records that don’t comply. The state has started notifying transgender people by mail that their licenses are invalid and they must get new ones immediately.

At least eight other states don’t allow transgender people to change one or both documents, but only Kansas has invalidated documents that were previously changed.

We should reject acts of culture warriors like this. Because the targets and victims of this culture war are our neighbors, our fellow citizens, our own brothers and sisters. And because “telling the world who you are” is a HUMAN RIGHT, not a legislative privilege of some cis-gendered folks racialized as white, who temporarily have an assigned seat in the state legislature.

I reject this culture of hate. Instead I choose to follow the path of the culture healers.

An educational illustration titled #HealOurCulture compares two societal approaches through a split-screen design. On the left, labeled "Culture Warriors" and "Culture of Hate," a dark, stormy scene depicts a large hand snapping an identity card that reads "Revoked Gender." Distressed individuals, including a person wearing LGBTQ+ pride pins, look on in a landscape filled with lightning and fences. On the right, labeled "Culture Healers" and "Culture of Love & Care," a bright, sunlit landscape shows a diverse group of people working together to mend a giant broken heart. This side features rainbows, flowers, and supportive gestures, symbolizing a transition from division toward community healing and acceptance.
