Tomorrow we’re going with our church to Charleston, South Carolina, to visit the International African American Museum. Shelly and I have lived here in Charlotte for 3.5 years, and have wanted to visit this museum for a long time. Particularly in this political moment, it seems especially important to both visit and support museums like IAAM focused on preserving and sharing stories of our “hard history” of colonialism, the enslavement of fellow human beings, and structures of racist oppression which continue to shape our lives and culture today.

This is a trip sponsored by the Anti-Racism Council at Caldwell (ARCC.) We’re going on a charter bus, and we may watch a view videos on the way. It’s a 3.5 hour trip.
These are two videos I burned to DVD so (if leadership decides they want to) we can watch these videos over the bus’ AV system, which is “DVD only.”
Whitewashed: Unmasking the World of Whiteness (35 min)
The lie that invented racism | John Biewen (TEDx talk, 18.5 min)
If you are interested in learning more about “whiteness,” Christian nationalism, and black perspectives on race and racism, I invite you to join me next year (starting in January 2026) for the “Confronting Whiteness” course and spiritual journey. This short video includes a personal invitation from me.
For more information about how I burned these YouTube videos to DVD, see my blog post on “Moving at the Speed of Creativity” from yesterday, “Burning DVDs in 2025.”
